Hardcore isn’t a fucking boys club.
Hardcore is supposed to be a haven for everyone that feels disenfranchised by society. It’s supposed to be a collective of people who reject the racist, homophobic and patriarchal aspects of a culture that are interwoven into every facet of daily life and it is our duty as socially aware people to work to dismantle it.
Not only is it fucking depressing when people defend racism, homophobia and misogyny in hardcore, but it’s even more depressing when they defend it simply because it’s hardcore, as if the simple fact that it’s music made by their peers means it automatically deserves respect regardless of the message it sends. You cannot use the backs of the people you outcast as the rungs of the social ladder of the week.
Slut shaming, enforcing rape culture, promoting racism and propagating homophobia out of some fear of appearing less masculine than your pit competition is never acceptable and putting your fucking scene above your ethical obligations is a shitty thing to do. If you support those bands, you support the oppression they endorse. There is so much more to hardcore than breakdowns and riffs and pretending you or your friends are infallible. The fact that you allow it to become so fucking meaningless is genuinely heartbreaking and it’s exactly what we were trying to escape in the first place.
